1,000 Books Before Kindergarten at Plainville Public Library

  • What is 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten?
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a program designed to encourage parents to read to and with their children from birth.  The goal is to read 1,000 books with your child before their first day of Kindergarten.
  • How old should my child be to sign up?
You can sign up anytime- as soon as your child is born!  And as long as your child hasn't started Kindergarten yet, there's still time.
  • How do I sign up?
Come to the Youth Services department at the library.  You will receive your first reading log as well as a leaf with your child's name on it to be added to our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten tree. Pick up a milestone sticker each time you finish 100 books. Once you get to 500 books you receive a free board book of your child's choice to keep.  When you get to 1,000 you receive a picture book and a tote bag.  Your leaf will then be permanently displayed at the top of the tree!  Best of all you'll have the memories of reading together.
  • Can I read the same book multiple times?
Yes! Most kids like to read books over and over- the same book counts towards the 1K every time, just make sure you log it each time!
  • Do books read at school or at library storytime count?
Absolutely! Any book that is read to/with your child can be counted toward the 1,000 books goal.
  • Which books should I read with my child?
Any book that you and your child enjoy! Visit the suggestions list at the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten page.  If you need a more personalized list of suggestions, please visit the library and ask one of our friendly children's librarians for suggestions.  We would love to help!
