The Middlesex Central CT Chapter's New Britain Office of the American Red Cross provides transportation for individuals 60 and over. This is a curb to curb transportation services.

Rides may be for a doctor’s appointment, counseling or visiting relatives in convalescent homes.  They also provide rides for shopping, banking, hairdressing and other personal use. Always call and verify as programs are subject to change.

Eligibility 

Passenger needs to be a resident of New Britain, Berlin, Kensington, East Berlin or Plainville

Appointment destinations can be to New Britain, East Berlin, Berlin, Kensington, Plainville, Bristol, Farmington or Newington.

Must be 60 years of age or older. If a wheelchair accessible vehicle is needed, please call American Red Cross Transportation to inform them.  If assistance is needed because of physical disability, an escort must be provided. The escort rides free.

Participants need to register with American Red Cross Transportation as a passenger. The process is simple.


Fees
There is a thirty dollar annual fee for membership


Each ride also charge at the following fees:
Local rides ( New Britain, Berlin, Kensington, East Berlin, Plainville): $2.00 one way, $4.00 round trip
Non Local Rides (Bristol, Farmington, Newington): One way $5.00, Round Trip $10.00

Cash or Check is accepted. Those who plan on using the transportation services frequently may purchase tickets.  Contact the office for information.

Appointment may be made by calling 860-229-1631 between  9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.  Reservations can be made for Monday through Friday. Generally they are closed on holidays. They also may cancel for bad weather. The earliest appointment may be made at 9:00 a.m. and the latest return would be 3:30 p.m. (approximately). Reservations are "first come, first serve". Reservations for same day appointments are discouraged.

The driver will arrive at the passenger’s house 15-30 minutes before their appointment time.  Passenger must be ready when the driver arrives.  The driver is allowed to wait approx. 5 minutes and then must leave for the next passenger. 

Riders are given an envelope by the driver.  The payment (cash, check, or ticket) should be placed in the envelope and returned to the driver. No tips please. The rider may pay in full at the beginning or the end of the trip.

Passenger must wear a seatbelt.

The driver is not allowed to make unscheduled stops without permission from the dispatcher. 

Passenger should call RED CROSS TRANSPORTATION when they are ready for a return ride. An approximate time of arrival will be given, passenger needs to be ready. The driver cannot leave the vehicle.
