Detective Division
The Detective Division consists of five police officers assigned full-time. A lieutenant is the division commander, and a detective sergeant is the division supervisor. Three police officers are currently assigned to the division as full-time detectives. Another sergeant splits time between the patrol division and the detective division and concentrates on special assignments, particularly narcotics investigations. Recently we have added a short-term, rotating position where a patrol officer spends a few months assigned to the division for the purpose of enhancing the officer’s experience and skill.
The Detective Division commander is responsible for overseeing all the division’s activities while the detective sergeant maintains direct supervision over most follow-up investigations. The Detective Division commander also investigates internal matters as assigned by the chief of police to ensure the integrity of the police department and oversees record dissemination.
Detectives occasionally investigate major cases from the onset; however, most cases are follow-up investigations initiated by patrol officers. These investigations include but are not limited to homicide, serious assault, sexual crime, arson, illegal drugs, robbery, burglary, identity theft, larceny, among others. This necessitates working closely with other law enforcement agencies and investigative specialists in private business.
One detective acts as the liaison between the police department and both the adult and juvenile courts and compiles the necessary documentation for the state’s attorney’s office. Detectives periodically conduct background investigations on police officer candidates, give crime prevention seminars, participate in the Juvenile Review Board, and represent the department in a multi-jurisdictional task force (MIT) on child abuse. The Detective Division maintains our criminal evidence facilities.
Responsibilities within the division also include monitoring Connecticut’s sexual offender registry, ensuring the forfeiture of firearms from those involved with domestic violence, investigating pistol permit applicants, and assisting the patrol division with investigative matters.
