Supervisory Dispatcher Al Urso (seated) along with Dispatchers Brian Roper and Dana Doughty pose near dispatch terminal one.
Communications Division
The Communications Division consists of five full-time emergency dispatchers along with three part-time positions. All of our dispatchers are state certified and receive regular training to stay current with technological advances.
Presently, Dispatcher Albert Urso supervises the division and he reports to the police administration. We are part of the Regional Incident Dispatch Team in partnership with surrounding police departments.
The dispatchers have a vital responsibility in the proper operation of the police department, and they are most often the initial point of contact between the police department and the public. Dispatchers handle everything from dire 911 emergency calls to routine inquiries. They must also dispense information at the front desk when members of the public come into the police department.
One of the many important functions now assigned to our dispatchers is the new reverse 911 system. When this feature is initiated, the public is contacted by phone during specific, town-wide emergency situations. For example the reverse 911 was used for a missing and endangered person with dementia and during Storm Alfred last fall.
