Get a Library Card
All residents of Plainville are encouraged to get a library card. Identification and proof of residency is required to obtain a library card. Acceptable ID is a valid picture ID (driver’s license or State of CT ID) with the applicant's name and current address. If the address on the ID is not current, a piece of mail with the applicant's name and Plainville address sent within the last 30 days is acceptable (the mail must be a bill or other official document). A child (17 and under) must have a parent or guardian with them to get a library card.
You are responsible for all items checked out on your card. Library staff may not give information about your borrowing record to anyone other than you. Library users' borrowing records are confidential and excluded from the Connecticut Freedom of Information Act. Library cards are free, however, there is a $1.00 replacement fee for lost cards. You must obtain a library card in the town you legally reside. A valid library card can be used at any library in Connecticut.
If you would like to try some of our online services and place items on hold before coming to the Plainville Library for your library card you can register online for a 30 day temporary card. To obtain a library card visit either of the Plainville Library Circulation desks during regular business hours.
Access My Account
My Account allows you to check your library record. You can renew items, place holds and pay fees online. You can opt-in to save your reading history so you can keep track of what you've read. You can change your pickup location for holds if your town library is not convenient. You can add your cell phone number to receive text messages when a hold is ready for pickup.
Place a Hold
You can place an item on hold by stopping at the Reference Desk or by calling the Library at 860-793-1446 (Adult Dept.) or 860-793-1450 (Children's Dept.). Have your library card ready when calling. You can also place a hold online by logging into My Account, searching for the item you want to put on hold and clicking Request It.
Holds placed on new books and DVDs may take a while to fill depending on how many holds have been placed and how many copies the library has purchased. Items coming from another library via deliverIT CT will take at least 1 week to arrive. Ask a librarian for assistance if you have any questions.
Items can be renewed by calling the library at 860-793-1446 (Adult Dept.) or 860-793-1450 (Children's Dept.) Have your library card ready when calling. You can also renew items at the Circulation desk. You do not need to have the item with you to renew. Items may be renewed up to 2 times. Browse books and items with holds cannot be renewed.
You can also renew items online by logging into My Account. Click on your name in the right corner under the yellow box, click in the box to the left of the title(s) you wish to renew, then click "Renew All" if you wish to renew everything you have checked out or click "Renew Marked" for selected items.
